Professional Advancement & Career Development

The Cambridge DELTA Diploma is a professional qualification at post-graduate level ( a Level 7 Qualification according to the British Curriculum Authority) and is one of the most sought after and well respected qualifications internationally. It is recognised by all British Universities and is fast becoming a prerequisite for some of the most interesting jobs in our field all over the world.

The course is ideal for experienced and qualified teachers wishing to enhance their career opportunities as Senior Teachers, ESP Instructors, Level Coordinators or Directors of Studies. The Diploma provides an excellent bridge for those who wish to pursue further academic qualifications related to TEFL at Masters level.

Structure of the DELTA Diploma

The course is organised around three modules, each of which is assessed separately. To find out more about the syllabus specifications, assignments and examination, please download and read the new syllabus guidelines by clicking here,

Module I  - this module can be delivered either face-to-face or online and it is assessed through a written examination. An example of the written assessment can be viewed here.

Written examinations can be taken at CELT (on the 1st Wednesday of June or December) but candidates  from other countries can find a centre near them which can administer the written exam - any centre offering CELTA will usually be already eligible to do this.

Module II -  this module is delivered face-to-face and it is assessed through background assignments and Teaching Practices which have to be written and taught/assessed during the course. Candidates have to complete five assignments, four of which are assessed internally and one externally by a Cambridge appointed external assessor who visits CELT Athens and observes all the candidates during their final Teaching Practice and grades their background assignment. The coursework of each candidate (portfolio) is sent to Cambridge for review and moderation and the final grade is decided during the Awards meeting for each session.

You can view Module II assignment and assessment specifications here.

Module III - this module is introduced during the course through input or individual tutorial. The write up phase takes place after the end of the course in the Full Time Course, but during the course in Part time Courses. During this stage the centre supports candidates either online or face to face, depending on which area  of specialization they have selected and availability of tutors with expertise in the particular field. Assessment is done through an extended written assignment which is submitted to Cambridge for marking and forms a separate part of the assessment.

During the last module (Module III) candidates may focus on an area of specialisms such as:

• Business English
• Teaching young learners/young adults (specified age group required with 5-year range e.g. 8–13, 14–15)
• English for Special Purposes
• English for Academic Purposes
• ESOL learners with clear specialist needs e.g. literacy needs
• CLIL/Embedded ESOL (teaching English through subject/work-based learning)
• Teaching examination classes
• Teaching one-to-one
• Teaching monolingual classes
• Teaching multilingual classes
• Teaching in an English-speaking environment
• Teaching in a non-English-speaking environment

This change means that the new DELTA scheme can be much more relevant to the different needs of different teachers. It is no longer dedicated to the teaching of adults, but covers other needs and age groups of interest to each candidate as well.

Candidates on the same course may even select a different specialism each and work on an assignment which may be of real value to their particular teaching context.

Here is some information on how Module II is assessed.

Course Options at CELT Athens:

T
he courses offered by CELT are integrated and cover all three modules within attendance dates. Each candidate must undertake an independent programme of preparation study prior to the course. After the end of the course, candidates may continue contact with their tutor for the completion of the write up of their Module III assignment work, but this is not face-to-face and is done online and via email.

1.        A 30-week ( 8-month) course which prepares candidates for the written examination in June or December. Sessions are held twice a week on weekdays, (10:00 - 13:00) or evenings (17:00-21:00).

2.        A 10 intensive weekends option. DELTA students come to CELT  approx. once a month (10:00 -17:00 on Saturdays & Sundays). Weekend courses start in October and January.

3.        An intensive course completed over 7 weeks in the summer, fall and  winter.

In addition to attending the full course, candidates can apply to attend any one of the three modules independently.

1.        Module I - face-to-face or online

2.        Module II - face-to face only

3.        Module III - face-face or online

All courses run subject to demand and a minimum of 8 candidates is required to run a course.

You can find information on tuition and payments here or in the application form download

To Apply:

Applicants must have experience of classroom teaching experience at a variety of levels. Please note that the DELTA is no longer a qualification for teaching adult classes.
Your experience may have been with

  • young and very young learners
  • teenagers
  • young adults
  • adults
  • business/professional English groups
  • academic English groups

Applicants must already hold a first degree in English or have appropriate qualifications which allow them to teach in their country; in addition, they should have attended a teacher training programme such as a CELTA, COTE or a Certificate in TEFL.

It is entirely at each centre's discretion to examine and accept each candidate on an individual basis according to their background, experience, training and potential and exceptions can sometimes be made, always at the

Selection is made on the basis of

1.        Classroom teaching experience as described above

2.        Educational background & evidence of TEFL training

3.        A Language and Methodology pre-course examination

4.        A personal interview with the Course Tutor.

Over and above the formal qualifications mentioned above, it must be understood that the DELTA course is challenging and candidates must be prepared to commit themselves to its demands. It is not an initial training qualification where one learns how to write lesson plans for the first time or conduct drills for the first time. These skills are assumed to be already in place at the start of the course. Furthermore, candidates are expected to be able to research and write academic assignments at the required length (most are app. 2,500 words) and to be able to organise their own learning, especially important for intensive courses during which candidates are expected to produce most of their written assignments and teach their assessed lessons.
