Centre for English Language & Training Electronic Newsletter

March 2007 Issue

Dear Readers,

Thank you for taking the time to read this new issue of our online newsletter. Now, I am no serious e-zine editor, but I am learning as I go along. As I write more and more of these newsletters, so they take on form and shape. On occasion, I have new ideas on what to include and some standard columns are emerging, such as the :Profile of the month" feature. In this issue, apart from our news, I am introducing a new feature which will hopefully become a standard one, the "Lesson plan of the month". This will include some of the very good lesson plans our trainees have produced while attending courses at CELT. In this month's issue, I have decided to include a lesson plan by one of our trainees in 2006 who was also an ASEP candidate. It is a fun lesson plan on introducing the present continuous to a group of beginners. Dina taught this lesson to our Afghan beginners and they enjoyed it tremendously. Try it out with your classes yourself and let us know how effective it was.

I wish you all the best for this new year.

1. Christmas Party & the TEFLVISION Song Contest

These are some snapshots from our pre-Christmas drinks and music party which started out with everyne shying away from the microphone and claiming they could definitely not sing. The day ended with everyone singing along to some great tunes with the Karaoke and in fact being very unwilling to let go of the microphone! In this column you can see some of our CELTA and CTEFL trainees (Maria Stathakis, Maria Mylona, Janet Wilson, Dina Markopoulou and Dora Synnefia)  having a go, then on the left, Diana Ieremia (one of our first CELTA trainees from Romania here for Christmas) and our very own Georgia  Georgopoulou with fellow CTEFL-er and close friend Kiki  Deroukaki competing for one of the prizes! And there were some great prizes!
In the midst of
some of his trainees, you can see Robin Wileman, our CELTA tutor for the course ending in December who refused to sing early on and then refused to give up the mike! Here he is too, dancing with Dina Markopoulou, who was one of our proud prize winners! Well, so much for all these shy non-singing birds!

2. And the winners are...

The judges, Marisa Constantinides, Robin Wileman & Vassilis Constantinides were hard put to decide sometimes, but here are their decisions.....

The 1st Prize had to go to ...
Alex Vince - well, no surprise really. We knew Alex was very much into music and he sings and plays drums! Alex won three books - Learning Teaching, Uncovering Grammar &  Teaching Reading Skills in a Foreign Language!  We can't remember what he sang but all the judges thought he was streets ahead of all the other singers!

The 2nd Prize went  to Maria Stathaki and Janet Wilson who sang heartily and won us over with their good voices - especially Maria... sorry Janet!  Maria & Janet won the same titles as Alex.

The 3rd Prize had to be given to  Maria Mylona and Dora Synnefia who sang with great gusto and actually sang very well! Well done girls! They won Learning Teaching & Uncovering Grammar.

The 4th Prize went to Georgia Georgogianni and Kiki Deroukaki  who won Reading Skills in a Foreign Language & Sound Foundations. Georgia & Kiki sang "Last Christams"!

The 5th Prize had to go to Dina Markopoulou who won the hearts of the judges through her excellent dance movements (we can forget about the voice!) and passionate performance... Dina won Sound Foundations for singing "I will survive" !!!!!!!

3. ASEP Examinations for State Sector English Language Teachers News

The exams are now done and the news is that some changes were noted this time round. In part A of the Methodology Paper, the candidates were not asked to submit a lesson plan of their own based on some given material, but to evaluate a lesson plan written by a state school teacher. This was a possibility our candidates had prepared for and in which we hope they have all done really well. If you are interested in finding out what the questions were for this year's exam, click on the links below  to download all three papers.

4. Lesson Plan of the Month -  Teaching the Present Continuous

This month, I am putting a link to our free materials page where you can find a lesson plan written by Certificate in TEFL trainee and ASEP candidate Dina Markopoulou (5th Prize WInner above!). It is a lesson plan for teaching the Present Continuous to our beginner Afghan students which Dina actually also taught here in her second Teaching Practice, but I believe that with minor adaptations it could be taught to younger beginners as well. Click here to download lesson plan and here to visit the free materials page.
