"HAVE A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR" ISSUE |
KALI SCHOLIKI CHRONIA!
Dear Readers,
A bit remiss this time but summer intensive courses have a way of
swallowing up one's time! July courses
included a Certificate in TEFL Course, a Cambridge CELTA course as
well as a full house of ASEP preparation trainees. The return to
Athens is always a shock - but by now I am fully recovered and
writing these lines as the September courses draw
to a close.
To all our list
members, I wish the very best for the school year, health, prosperity
and peace.

WHAT MAKES A LESSON PLAN GOOD OR EXCEPTIONAL?

The
topic was lesson planning and teachers from all over Greece came to
attend. More than 300 teachers and FL centre owners came to attend
this talk which was delivered on Saturday, September 3rd. You
can view some of the photos in the next column by clicking on the
thumbnails . |
The topic of
lesson planning is coming up again as a workshop topic in October. Those of you
who would like to attend a one-day workshop on planning lessons using authentic
materials (of general interest as well as of interest to those preparing for the
ASEP exams) please visit this link to check out the dates and download an
application form. |

classes, or evening classes (18.30-20.30) do please let them know.

3. Free
Books for teachers on this mailing list
|
We recently
received a rather large donation of English books by a bookshop in
Cyprus which closed down. We really don't need them all! Our
library is bursting at the seams at present and we are hopeful
that those of you who can will pop in to pick up a title or two.
Most of the titles are hardback editions, so do come in and take
your pick. |

CELTA RESULTS
Congratulations to ALL our CELTA
trainees in July who passed with flying
colours!
We will be posting photographs and even a short
video extract
on this page soon.
TEACHING PRACTICE CLASSES
All summer groups taught our free beginner and intermediate
classes and it is a mark of the high quality of the lessons taught
that the students kept coming in until the very last possible
moment before their summer break! |
The snashot is of three of our September CTEFL trainees who wished
to immortalise the first moments after their very first Teaching
Practice:
Tammy Valta (left), a mummy of two with the third one well on its
way, who lives and works in Dubai; Kostas Evangelinos, a primary
teacher in the UK who decided to change his career and retrain as
an EFL teacher; and Debbie Ignatiou, from "Down Under" who got
jealous of Skye (daughter) doing the course and decided to do the
same. They all look quite happy (or could this be a look of
relief?)
By the time you read these lines, Baby Valta, who had serious
doubts about this whole exercise will have arrived in the world
fully trained up to teach English anywhere in the world! |

Athena Lamberis
Athena, a child of
Greek-American immigrants, came to us in 2005 and completed her
training by following the Certificate in TEFL course. You can see
her in the pose above with fellow-trainees, Daphne Gougla, Georgia
Georgogianni, Kikie Deroukaki, Maria Makri and Elena
Michalopoulou.
Athena taught us a
thing or two about how to dance the
Capoeira, and how to be enthusiastic and professional
about teaching. She worked her way through her studies at CELT and
today she has got a job in the Honduras teaching young children .
Her
enthusiasm and love of
teaching the
pupils
are a joy to look at and we wish her
the very best in her professional career as an educator.

Athena herself has no important
message she wishes to convey to young teachers beginning their
career but we find her sense of adventure and desire to work in
parts of the world where children are not privileged refreshing
and extremely hopeful.
There are many such teaching
opportunities for young teachers all over the world and it is a
pity that not so many young Greek teachers of English do not
venture a little farther afield (farther than the language school
down the road) to gain some valuable experiences and to
enrich their lives and their teaching as well.
