A language is as rich as its literature

   

A 100-hour course covering the main aspects of this century's main literary works in English. The course is open to teachers and non-teachers who wish to enrich their linguistic and literary experience in English - it is NOT a methodology course although a session on how to exploit material can be added should teacher participants request it. Here are some of the topics covered during this programme:

Main Areas

  • 20th Century prose, poetry & drama  

  • The Greek influence (ancient, modern and myth) in 20th century literature

  • Booker Prize & Pullitzer Prize Authors 1996-2003

  • The Beatnik Generation-its origins and influence on literature

  • Women Writers 1980-2003

Elective subjects

  • Exploiting Literature for Teaching Purposes

  • Literary Appreciation through Film Studies

  • 20th Century Erotic Poetry

  • Translation difficulties in contemporary literary text (semantic/lexical, discourse,  culture, equivalence, syntactic, metre in poetry)

Assessment is continuous through  essay  assignments

Prerequisites

To participate in this course, a satisfactory level of English is required. Applicants should have obtained a recognised Proficiency or should be working towards obtaining their Certificate. A placement test is required in the case of non-native speaker participants.
